Sri Lanka is one of the best whale watching destinations, offering year-round opportunities to encounter blue whales, sperm whales, and large pods of spinner dolphins in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The island’s position at the junction of major cetacean migration routes means that as one season ends on the southern coast, another begins on the east, creating a near-continuous window of opportunity across the calendar. Our whale watching expeditions depart from both Mirissa (November to April) and Trincomalee (May to October), using certified operators who follow responsible guidelines for vessel behaviour around marine mammals. Blue whales are regularly sighted close to shore, and the experience of watching one surface alongside the boat, exhaling a column of mist into the morning sky, is genuinely humbling.
